What next? What if our computers all go down? Does anyone remember how to write a letter? Seems me that this is all out of hand, but it's fun right now.
I think what is next is more emphasis on what it truly means to be a social media marketer - with emphasis on marketer. Right now we are in the stages of people claiming to be experts or gurus, but in truth they are most likely just people that know how to game the system to get large numbers on sites like twitter and have basic design skills to create a background that looks like they have a clue. But in truth, a lot of these people are not marketers, more likely they are snake oil salespeople.
As this segment of an integrated marketing plan shakes out we will see a lot of smarter social media marketing take place, this is just like what we saw with SEO/SEM (even though the snake oil peddlers are still around.) Once companies start demanding ROI there will be a bit of a shakeout and the true marketers that happen to know how to utilize social media as part of a larger plan will rise to the top.
Of course, by then, we will most likely be in the midst of the next big thing.
